As a sixth-grade math whiz, Lilah hopes that joining Digital Divas, the girls’ computer science club, will smooth out her bumpy start in middle school. Lilah’s team, the Hexadecis, competes against a group of older students for an all-expenses paid trip to the national Digital Divas summer program across the country in San Francisco, where her dad now lives with a new wife and baby. Lilah believes that winning the contest will finally guarantee her father’s attention.
As Lilah and her team develop their coding skills by building their project in the Digital Divas’ virtual environment, they encounter a strange electric entity who knows their names. The Hexadecis are also threatened by a hacker, who vandalizes their work. To learn about the entity, discover the hacker, and win the contest, Lilah and her teammates must wrestle with complex middle-school challenges they never imagined.
Raw Words Writing is the home for Sandra Shattuck, who writes fiction, essays, and poetry. She first became interested in all things techy, when her dad gave her a Digi-Comp I kit when she was a girl. Her love for writing and languages prompted her to get a PhD in comparative literature. As a professor, she became more intrigued in how to use technology in education.
In her first programming class in C with Sue Bogar, a college instructor, Sandra asked, “Aren’t computers magical?” Sue’s response: “Of course!” Sandra continues to be intrigued by that combination of mystery, logic, poetry, and math.
